The archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar, India’s blue jewel, is located in the

Bay of Bengal. The Union Territory is popular for its coral reefs, beaches

and marine life. The length of National Highways has increased from 330.70

km in 2014 to 422 km in 2018. 6 new NH have been added. Rs. 10,000 Cr

investments have been planned towards development of roads, waterways

and ports. Projects spanning 87 km length worth Rs. 860 Cr have been

awarded in 2017-18. Work has been awarded on 26 km length worth Rs. 170

Cr in Beodnabad- Ferrargunj section and on 56 km length worth Rs. 410 Cr

between Austin Creek and Kalra on NH 4.

The Humphrey Strait Creek bridge worth Rs.278 Cr and the Middle Strait

Creek bridge worth Rs. 263 Cr are already awarded. Due to heavy rainfall, 139

km of NH 4 was in a dilapidated state. Upgradation work has been awarded

in 3 packages, worth a total of Rs. 1,112 Cr. Projects worth Rs.417 Cr spanning

55 km will be awarded in a month. DPR is being prepared for a bridge worth

Rs. 2,000 Cr to connect Chatham island and Bambooflat island. A total of

Rs. 2,000 Cr are being invested to build waterways, acquire new ships, and

give a massive boost to water transportation by the Ministry of Waterways

and Shipping.

Soon Andaman & Nicobar islands will be accessible on all weather roads,

bridges and waterways. The projects will catalyse the growth of industry,

tourism and trade in the region, adding socio-economic benefits for the

people.
